Let’s organize: accessories

I miss my walk-in closet. I really do.

There was a magical girly feeling while stepping into my closet because I had all my jewelry and accessories nicely displayed. Now I find myself with no space and I have to manage to make it look nice, clean and tidy.

So after taking a look at some ideas on the internet I found that I could save space by using my empty walls. Some hooks and there you go: my fashion trinkets have a place to rest.

Before and after: mini balcony make-over

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The weather is starting to get a little warmer and I can’t be more excited about it!

When we were looking for an apartment back in September, I hoped it would have a balcony. So to my surprise, we found that this place had three mini balconies and one of them was big enough for me to put a small table and two chairs. I also added some colorful lights that I bought from Tiger (this store is going to be the end of me) and a bamboo rug.

Lately we’ve been blessed with beautiful sunny days and I can’t wait to have my morning coffee in the balcony when it gets a little warmer.

Microscopic office

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I remember having a comfortable office back in our old apartment. Remember this post? Well I am going to show you my new tiny workspace.

We bought this desk at Ikea and it was resting in our bedroom. I adopted our dining table as my office and everyday I had to move my things when we…well…dined. So I moved the desk from the bedroom to our living room (since there was an available space now that the Christmas tree was gone) and now I have a lovely view from where I am now writing this post.

I added my office supplies so it felt more like a workspace. Before you go all judgemental on me for the little uncomfortable pink chair, I am going to buy a proper sitting chair so I won’t turn into Quasimodo before the year ends.

I am also going to add some more things…but for now…here it is:

Our new little home

I loved this place since I entered the first time and saw the natural light coming in from the windows. The apartment owners are the sweetest people you can meet. While they explained paperwork, all I did was stand there and enjoy what would be my new home.

I started mentally organizing the apartment and getting really excited how everything was going to turn out.

The first thing I did was clean the place like three times. After that, we had to improvise a lot. We bought two pillows and a blanket. They gave us the key to the apartment at 9 pm. We had little time to buy things for the night but we managed to sleep like babies in our new home.

Next day was all about IKEA : my new best friend. We bought our furniture there and some decorations. I can’t wait to start my DIY projects for the house! (Yes, that peach wall is going DOWN)

What I am going to show you is just a temporary look of the apartment. We have been working like crazy and having strange hours of sleep. But I want to show you how it is coming along.

New home, new life

UPLOAD1

I have to confess I have had a really hard time finding a place to live. When I was looking for an apartment in Miami it was so much easier. But after long days and walking like a marathon athlete, we found a lovely place to start from scratch.

The new is located in an old building near Madrid’s downtown. It is a very calm and tranquil neighborhood with tons of little stores around it. It had two rooms: one will be Jimmy’s office where he will be working all day long and the other one will be our bedroom. The living room is really nice. We have two small balconies with a lovely view where we can peak between trees and take a glance at people walking.

UPLOAD 2

We don’t count with an elevator, but I think it will do us good to climb some stairs until the 3rd floor everyday (until it is time to buy water and it won’t be that fun at all.)

Soon I will try to go back to the original weekly mode of this blog’s format, but until then, I will be keeping you updated in the “Miscelaneous” section.

So excited!

A little office inspiration

I have had a love-hate relationship with our current apartment for a while now. The problem has always been that when we moved here, this was going to be a “temporary” situation. I can’t emphasize enough all the problems this apartment has. We bought the apartment in a rush and that is why the guy who sold us the place was so happy. Not only he had the most hideous taste in furniture, colors and wood, but he also left the apartment with a water problem and an electricity problem. (Thank you dear, I hope karma comes back to you soon.)

So enough with the negative things, we are planning on moving soon. Yey! I can’t tell you where or when, because I want to make it a surprise, but changes are coming our way!

Remember this post about my office? Well I don’t plan on changing it again because we are moving out… but I do want to share some inspirations for my future office or workspace.

Organizing my “baking shelves”

There is no doubt I like to be in the kitchen. I cook, bake and keep it clean. The problem is sometimes, when I am in a hurry, I leave a mess after my cooking tutorials. Yesterday I was searching for my piping bag and found a terrible mess in my “baking shelves”. This particular place in the kitchen is supposed to be for storing my utensils but lately is has become the place where we “hide” most of the things lying around.

If I take a longer look at this picture I am going to have a heart attack. (What the hell is the rubbing alcohol doing in there??)

before1

I took everything out, cleaned the space and rearranged everything. (Not to mention I put the rubbing alcohol where it belongs.)

after1

Now I can continue living my life in peace. (Seriously, who on earth could store the rubbing alcohol there??)

Home idea: repurpose a ladder

I bought a bamboo ladder two years ago thinking it would be great for hanging towels in our bathroom. Problem was that the ladder was to big to fit comfortably next to the shower and it was too thick for the towels to hang. Fantastic. So the ladder went back and forth from our living room to our bedroom not fitting anywhere. Yesterday I found these pictures that inspired me to do something with the poor thing.

Fotor0418230713So I hanged my scarves. Not all of them, but the ones I use the most. Now I have them in display and they are easier to grab in my room. (I took this picture in the hallway so you can have a better look.) Sorry for the terrible light in the picture above. I promise I will get better lights for future pictures.

Let’s organize: closet edition

closet 1

Don’t we all wish to have a big walking closet where all our wardrobe’s pieces would lay there like a fancy and glamorous store? Off course we do. Unfortunately most of us don’t have the space and end up asphyxiating our clothes one on top of the other or one next to the other if we are lucky.

I usually follow this guide that I hope will help you out:

1) Choose a day when you know you will have time to take everything out from your closet. (When I say everything, I mean it.) You will be able to have a perspective of everything you own in your closet.

2) Clean the space. I like to use a natural cleaning spray that is a mix of water, vinegar and a little baking soda to clean everything from top to bottom.

3) I am terrified of moths. These little fellows have a passion for eating my lovely shirts and I refuse for my clothes to smell like naphthalene. I bought some essential oils that are natural moth repellents and make your closet smell amazing. (Mix in a small bowl the next essential oils: lavender, spearmint, cedar wood and cinnamon. Pour in a spray bottle and spray where you cleaned before. Let rest until dry.)

4) Now it’s time to move to your clothes. I usually have two boxes. I label my boxes with “donate” and “maybe”. Then I start dividing my clothes in piles depending if they are skirts, dresses, pants, shorts, bathing suits, shoes, etc. I also divide my eyewear, jewelry, scarves, hats, belts, everything.

5) I start by returning to their original place all things I wish to keep and start putting in one of the boxes all the things I wish to donate. The pieces that I am having second thoughts with, I put them in the “maybe” box.

6) When you put the things you are going to keep back in the closet, divide them by type. Dresses go with dresses, pants with pants, etc. I like to organize my clothes by color because it is easier to find things when I am in a hurry. (Yes, I am that kind of girl.)

6) When I am done organizing the things I want to keep and the things I want to donate, I go to the “maybe” box and start trying everything on. Clothes that are not flattering or I haven’t worn in a really long time go to the “donate” box and the things that I like go back to the closet. (It’s ok to have pieces that have a sentimental value to you, but please don’t become hoarders. The point here is to make some space and get rid of things you don’t use anymore.)

There you go! Now you know everything that’s in there and you probably have more space.

As easy as it gets: jar decor

potecito portada

The first time I found this tutorial on Pinterest, I was obsessed and made tons of golden jars. Since my apartment was resembling a jar store, I baked miniature cookies and put them inside as gifts for friends. Smart right? I have a few at home where I store my craft buttons and other different small items.

You will need:

– Gold spray paint (or any other color you like)

– Glue gun

– A jar with a lid

– Plastic little animals (I used an old Barbie’s teddy bear)

potecito 1

Glue the plastic animal to the lid and spray paint.

There you go: fun and useful.

Vanity table inspiration

There is something glamorous about having your own vanity table. It is a place where your makeup rests and all your little beauty trinkets fit.

Since a little girl I always wanted one. On my 25th birthday my boyfriend bought one for me and you can imagine how happy I was. The only problem was I wasn’t in love with the color. So I let out the little Martha Stewart that lives in me and gave it a fresh look. I sand it and then coated with white paint. I kept the original stool’s fabric because it gave it a vintage look.

Here you can have a peak at my vanity table in an old post.

I thought white was splendid so this picture inspired me to paint mine that same color.

Organized Jewelry: From boring to fabulous

portada

We have a small room in our apartment that I declared mine. (Yes I’m kind of territorial). At first it was a fun craftroom then a girly office. None of that worked out. It was abandoned and non creative.

One day I was smashing clothes inside drawers and asphyxiating dresses inside the closet and it hit me. Why not have a big walking closet? BINGO. The little room became my room of wonders.

My vanity table had finally found a home, my clothes finally breathed and my jewelry, well my jewelry was feeling good but not pretty.

Yesterday I gave my room of wonders a makeover and now my little trinkets are displayed for me to hug them and wear them.

before 1

It was organized but kind of dull.

My necklaces tangled and it was kind of hidden mess.

Here we go: organized and pretty. I bought 3 things that helped a lot: a necklace mannequin, a bracelet holder and a necklace and earring holder. Here you can find the DIY versions of jewelry display.
