My top 5 favorite smells

Smells can transport us to many places; some of them remind us of good times, some of them repulse us and some of them remind us of a specific person. Isn’t it amazing how we can recognize smells? Have you ever thought about it? How our mind clicks with aromas? I think is pretty awesome.

Here are my top five:

1) Coffee. Well this is an obvious one. Mornings go to a whole new level when the kitchen is filled with delicious fresh coffee aroma.

2) Clean sheets. I change my sheets on Friday. It makes my weekend nights so much better. Coming home from a long day and dive in clean sheets is heaven.

3) Basil. This smells takes me back to my childhood and reminds me of Italy. My mom uses basil for her «pasta al pomodoro» and I love her classic recipe.

4) White musk. This was my first «cologne». I remember my impromptu trip to the Body Shop with my aunt Nani and falling in love with this fresh smell.

5) Jasmine flower. Buy one of these aromatic flower plants and your whole house will smell heavenly.

Do you guys have any favorites?

So yes, I am a dreamer

sleeping

I dream every-single-night.

I even dream when I take a nap. I wake up and rewind my dream to see how much I can remember. I write it down. I sometimes encounter people I love that are not here anymore. My grandfather often appears in my dreams, he talks to me and I feel him really close. My father-in-law Mr. Carmelo often visits me and is part of my dream scene. Sometimes I dream I am singing on top of my voice and it is the best feeling in the world. Have you ever had the joy of dreaming you are flying?

I am truly free in this imaginary world of mine.

I also have nightmares and many nights I have woken up crying with bitter tears. I have to take a minute to realize it was just a dream and come back to reality. This happens rarely, but I also giggle sometimes and laugh. My boyfriend finds this funny and he is the one who tells me when I do. Imagine how freaked out he must feel sometimes having the person next to him deep asleep and giggling.

I told this to my neurologist and she told me it was fantastic that I did remember them. Not everybody does.

I don’t have to fall asleep to keep on dreaming, sometimes reality is so raw that all we see is black and white scenarios. But my dreams are colorful and I can turn them in anything I want to…

A little office inspiration

I have had a love-hate relationship with our current apartment for a while now. The problem has always been that when we moved here, this was going to be a «temporary» situation. I can’t emphasize enough all the problems this apartment has. We bought the apartment in a rush and that is why the guy who sold us the place was so happy. Not only he had the most hideous taste in furniture, colors and wood, but he also left the apartment with a water problem and an electricity problem. (Thank you dear, I hope karma comes back to you soon.)

So enough with the negative things, we are planning on moving soon. Yey! I can’t tell you where or when, because I want to make it a surprise, but changes are coming our way!

Remember this post about my office? Well I don’t plan on changing it again because we are moving out… but I do want to share some inspirations for my future office or workspace.

Eyes: fabulous gold eyeshadow

I have brown eyes and I have learned what colors suit me and what colors make me look like I had a fight with a makeup artist.

Gold looks good on brown eyes because it is part of that color palette (what the heck, gold look good on everything!). I like to wear a smoky eye and then fill it with gold on the inside crease. Sometimes I wear black liner on the top lid and a small golden line under the eye. Looks pretty good if you ask me.

On the bottom I have posted three makeup tutorials I found on Youtube. Enjoy!

Stuffed red peppers

8

In Greek «gemistes piperies» means stuffed red peppers (or any other color peppers but these taste sweeter). They also have «gemista» that are stuffed tomatoes and peppers. My grandmother made these with rice but I prefer the low carb version.

Feel free to add a cup of rice to this recipe, I did so in one so that Jimmy wouldn’t complain.

Ingredients:

– 3 big red peppers

– 3 cups lean ground meat

– 1 small onion

– 1 cup broth

– 1/4 cup fresh and minced  parsley

– Olive oil

– Salt and pepper to taste

Try to choose big peppers so you can fill them properly.

1

Start by cutting your pepper’s tops, those are going to be your «hats» to close the peppers once they are ready. Pre-heat your oven to 450 degrees. Pour one small teaspoon on top of each pepper with a little salt and broil in the oven for 30 min.

5

– Mince the onion and the parsley together. In a medium pot heat a tablespoon of olive oil. Toss the mix from the onion and the parsley and stir for approximately 5 minutes. Toss in the meat and add salt and pepper to taste. Slowly add the broth little by little. Leave just 3 tablespoons in a small bowl to use later.

The meat will be ready when all the broth has evaporated.

3

– Fill your peppers with the cooked meat. If you want you can add a little rice to the mix as I did above. Take your 3 tablespoons of broth and add one to each stuffed pepper.

– Close the peppers and broil for 10 minutes.

Greece: 5 places where I would rather be right now

Summer is here, I am working: no fun at all. I am here sitting in my work space wishing I was swimming in the clear and warm Greek waters. My summers consisted of frappe coffee, swimming and sharing with family. I want to leave everything as it is, pack a small bag and randomly leave.

So today my mind is flying far away and I want to share my inspiration board of five places I’d rather be right now instead inside a room with air condition and extreme allergy.

I really tried…

When I was a little girl I tried to look like my mom. I looked up to her and I thought she was the most beautiful woman alive. She was a model back in her days and when I saw her pictures I was proud showing it to all my friends telling them how beautiful my mom was. I wanted to be just like her.

After I grew up, circa 11 years, I wanted to be like my dad; funny and witty. I loved that about him. So I mimicked all his jokes.

In school I tried to fit in the «popular» group and after some failures, I tried to fit in the «rebel» kids group. No success at all.

Once I reached high school, my goal was to be a dancer, so I followed my inspirations (Polina Semionova and Alessandra Ferri) and tried to be like them. I wanted to dance just like them (just to find out that I had my own way of dancing and it was pretty cool too.)

I tried to be a normal girl: I tried to fit in so many groups that it made me the most unhappy person in the whole world. I spent time with people I didn’t like just to «fit in», I partied, I drank and I even started smoking. Deep inside I hated all those things.

So I have come to the conclusion that I really don’t have to «fit» anywhere. I fit me. I am me. I have my good and my bad traits. I am stubborn, nervous and sometimes grumpy. But I am also kind, organized and funny (well I think I am). I love to dance and sing. I would never picture myself having a girly night out or clubbing until I drop. I don’t like crowds so I don’t like concerts (except Britney’s).

Normal is overrated. Don’t fit it, stand out.

Be you, I know you are pretty awesome.

Inspiration of the week: navy stripes

My mom loves stripes when it comes to clothing. At first, I did not like them because they looked weird on me. Then as I got older, I found out that not every type of stripe is for every type of body. So I was using them wrong. Wide stripes do not look good on me so now I choose thinner ones. For this week’s inspiration (thanks mom) I chose navy stripes.

Let’s just pretend we have some white shorts, a navy striped shirt, bare-feet and some sunglasses walking in the beach… Sounds lovely to me.

We love it: Cauliflower Pizza Crust

8

I crave pizza all the time. I have it from time to time but not as often as I would love to. I found many recipes to substitute normal crust with cauliflower crust and I told you guys I would try some of them in this post.

One small warning: your kitchen is going to smell nasty when you are boiling and draining the cauliflower…but it will be all worth it at the end!

Here is the recipe I followed from «Eat.Drink.Smile».

I changed a little the toppings. I drained the cauliflower «rice» and put it in a clean cloth. You have to squeeze all the liquid out. I also didn’t use the microwave I just boiled my rice with enough water and a bit of salt. After many crusts gone wrong, I learned that it comes out pretty crunchy when you drain all the water from the cauliflower.

So let’s begin!
